History of Asturias

When the Moors invaded Spain in 711 AD the Cantabrian Mountains became the one place the invaders could not conquer. This made Asturias the birthplace of the Reconquista: the long effort to reclaim Spain. Its first kings built their own distinct style of architecture the Pre Romanesque which you can still see near Oviedo today. This early kingdom was the cradle of Spanish Christianity and its history is closely tied to its legendary victory at the Battle of Covadonga. The Asturian crown eventually moved south but the region retained its strong independent spirit and unique traditions. Later the region was heavily shaped by its industrial history particularly its coal mining industry and its major port cities like Gijón. Today this legacy is reflected in its proud culture its famous ciders and its deep connection to the land.
