History of Andalusia

The history of Andalusia is dominated by its eight centuries under Islamic rule. Before that the region was a powerful Roman colony but its identity changed completely when the Moors arrived from North Africa in 711 AD. This ushered in the era of Al Andalus, a golden age of science art and tolerance that made the region the most advanced place in medieval Europe. The Moorish rulers built breathtaking cities like Cordoba and Granada leaving behind architectural masterpieces. The Alhambra Palace and the Mezquita are powerful visual reminders of this sophisticated civilization. This long period of Islamic rule created a culture distinct from the rest of Spain. A unique blend of traditions that influences everything from food to music. This era ended dramatically with the Christian Reconquest which concluded in 1492 with the fall of Granada. That same year Andalusia became the staging point for Christopher Columbus’ voyage starting the age of Spanish exploration. Here you'll find a profound trip through time exploring magnificent palaces built by sultans and grand cathedrals built by kings all standing side by side in this complex region.
