History of Timiș (county)

Timiș is the western powerhouse of the nation and the site where the modern history of the region was rewritten. Its capital Timișoara was the first city in Europe to have electric street lighting in 1884 and served as the spark for the 1989 Revolution that ended the communist regime. The city history is a mosaic of empires with the Huniade Castle built in 1443 standing as the oldest monument in the city alongside the baroque palaces of the Union Square which were constructed after the Habsburgs liberated the city from the Ottomans in 1716. The city was engineered as a star shaped fortress with a complex canal system that turned the Bega into the first navigable waterway in the country. The county geography is dominated by the fertile Banat plain which became the industrial and agricultural envy of the Austro Hungarian Empire. The region was a laboratory for Enlightenment reforms in the 18th century as German and Italian settlers were brought in to drain the marshlands and build the modern farming infrastructure that still exists today. This multiethnic history is visible in the architecture of villages like Charlottenburg which is the only circular village in the land built in 1771. The county also holds the history of the Jimbolia border post which was a vital transit point for the Orient Express and other international trains connecting Paris to Constantinople. For a road trip user the DN6 offers a high speed connection to the western border passing through a landscape of elegant baroque towns and massive industrial parks. You can drive to the Recaș Vineyards where wine has been produced since the Roman era or explore the Surduc Lake for a quiet escape in the hills. The local roads lead to the Banat Village Museum where you can see the diverse architectural styles of the many ethnic groups who have called this region home for centuries. Timiș is a journey through the avant garde spirit of the western frontier and the refined imperial legacy of the Banat plains.
