History of Neamț (county)

Neamț is the spiritual fortress of the north and home to the military stronghold that stopped the Ottoman Sultan. The Neamț Citadel was built in the 14th century on a high rock plateau and in 1476 it successfully withstood the siege of Mehmed the Conqueror who was forced to retreat after failing to breach its thick walls. The county is also the site of the Neamț Monastery which was documented in 1210 and became the most important cultural center of Moldova where thousands of manuscripts were copied by hand to preserve the history and religion of the state. The landscape was radically transformed in 1960 with the construction of the Bicaz Dam which is over 120 meters high and created the Izvorul Muntelui lake. This project required the labor of over 15000 people and the relocation of 22 villages to provide electricity for the eastern part of the country. To the west the Bicaz Gorges offer a dramatic limestone canyon where the walls rise 300 meters high and are so narrow that they were once a natural gate between the provinces of Moldova and Transylvania. Above the gorges sits the Ceahlău Massif which was considered the sacred mountain of the Dacians and is the only peak in the country with its own dedicated religious feast day. For a road trip user the route through the Stânișoara Mountains leads to the Vânători Neamț park where you can see bison which were the symbols of the Moldavian coat of arms. You can visit the Agapia Monastery where the interior was painted in 1858 by a young Nicolae Grigorescu who became the nation greatest painter. The local culture is deeply tied to the stories of Ion Creangă whose childhood home in Humulești remains a perfectly preserved example of 19th century rural architecture. Neamț is a majestic journey through the royal defense of the princes and the massive scale of modern mountain engineering.
