Zeeland

Zeeland

Zeeland is a province where the sea has never been a backdrop but a constant force that defines daily life. Zeeland is spread across islands and peninsulas. It feels like a different world the moment you cross its long bridges. Small charming towns sit beside wide sandy beaches, seafood is served almost straight from the boats and the salty breeze follows you wherever you drive. You come here for space and clarity. Roads lead past endless dikes, fields and villages with church towers that have stood watch for centuries. The rhythm of tides creates ever changing landscapes. Perfect for long walks, cycling routes and scenic drives. Inland, you will find peaceful towns filled with regional character, from Middelburg’s stately streets to the fishing heritage of places like Arnemuiden and Bruinisse. Its land exists because generations fought back the water. Shaping a province that is both fragile and beautifully unique. Zeeland lets you explore a place where land and sea meet on their own terms.

History of Zeeland

Zeeland, meaning “Sea Land,” is a special province in the southwest of the Netherlands, made up of islands and peninsulas. Its history is shaped by the constant battle with the sea. For centuries, floods have changed the landscape, with some villages lost underwater, especially during the devastating North Sea flood of 1953. To protect the land, the Dutch built the Delta Works, a remarkable system of dams and barriers. Zeeland’s people have always shown great resilience, reflected in their motto “Luctor et emergo” (“I struggle and emerge”). The region was a Viking settlement in the 9th century. Over time, small islands were connected by dikes, turning marshes into farmland. Zeeland grew wealthy during the Middle Ages and the Dutch Golden Age through trade and shipping. Zeeland proudly preserves its rich history and traditions. Historic towns like Middelburg, Veere and Zierikzee show the old city walls, windmills and castles. The province is also known for its lively festivals and local treats, such as the Zeeuwse bolus pastry. All set against a backdrop of a land that has continually fought the sea and won.
