History of Emmen
Emmen is a city of two halves that tells the story of the high sands and the low bogs. For thousands of years it was a lonely village perched on a ridge of sand surrounded by endless peat lands. The early people here were hunters and farmers who built their homes near the giant **megalithic tombs** of their ancestors. Life was hard and the weather was wild but the community grew strong by working the soil and harvesting the peat for fuel. The big change came after the war when the city was chosen to be a center for modern industry. Instead of building a traditional dense center the planners left room for nature. This created a unique **green city** where modern apartments sit right next to ancient woods and open fields. It became a place where the future was built without destroying the past. The soul of the town is now tied to the famous **Wildlands Adventure Zoo** which moved from the center to a massive new world on the edge of the city. It shows the bold spirit of the local people who are not afraid to change everything to make something better. Today you can find ancient history in the woods and **futuristic architecture** in the square.
